Vermox tablets contain the active ingredient mebendazole, which is a type of medicine called an anthelmintic. It is used to treat certain types of worm infections of the gut.
Vermox (Mebendazole) works by preventing worms from being able to absorb sugars that are essential for their survival. This depletes the energy stores of the worms, leading to their eventual death within a few days. The dead worms are then excreted from the gut in the stools.
Vermox (Mebendazole) is used mainly in the treatment of threadworm, however is also used to treat infections of roundworm, whipworm and hookworm.
A single dose is effective for treating threadworm infections, but a second dose may be needed after two weeks if the infection comes back. It is recommended that the whole family are treated.
For treating roundworm, hookworm or whipworm infections, one dose is needed twice a day for three days.
Precautions
Follow all instructions of your doctor about treament, washing of linens, clothing, and towels as pinworm infections are easily spread from one person to another.
Contraindications
Discuss with your doctor all conditions that you may have before starting to take Vermax. It's not recommended to take the medicine if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. It's not know whether Vermax passes into breast milk. Do not take it without doctor's approbation if you are breastfeeding. Children younger than 2 years old should not take mebendazole.
Possible side effects
If you experience such allergic reactions as hives, swelling of your lips, tongue, closing of your throat, shortness of breath, seek medical attention immediately. Also less serious side effects may occur such as abdominal pain, diarrhea o fever. If you experience them continue take Vermax and tell you doctor about them.
