Pulmicort contains budesonide which is a corticosteroid. Budesonide prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.
Pulmicort is used to prevent asthma attacks. It will not treat an asthma attack that has already begun. It works by decreasing irritation and swelling in the airways, which helps to control or prevent asthma symptoms.
How to use:
Budesonide is a type of medicine called a steroid (of the glucocorticosteroid type), which reduces inflammation in the airways that is partly responsible for the symptoms of asthma.
It is important to take budesonide every day because it treats the long-lasting (chronic), underlying part of asthma. For this reason, it is called a preventer medication.
The inflammation is the "quiet part" of asthma that you cannot hear, see, or feel. When it is left untreated, inflammation can worsen. The lungs can become more inflamed and asthma symptoms and attacks can increase.
Glucocorticosteroids are not the same as anabolic steroids (the type of steroids that some athletes have been known to take to improve their athletic performance).
