Indocin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to reduce swelling and to treat pain. It may be used for painful joint and muscular problems such as arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, and gout.

Take Indocin by mouth with food and with a full glass of water. Take your medicine at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Long-term, continuous use may increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of Indocin in children. Special care may be needed. While this drug may be prescribed for children as young as 15 years for selected conditions, precautions do apply.

Elderly patients over 65 years old may have a stronger reaction and need a smaller dose. If you think you have taken too much of Indocin contact a poison control center or emergency room at once. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. Do not use Indocin if you are allergic to indomethacin, or if you have a history of allergic reaction to aspirin or other NSAIDs.

Side effects
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, heartburn, rash, headache, dizziness and drowsiness. Indocin may cause or worsen stomach or intestinal bleeding or ulcers. It may lead to perforation of the intestine. NSAIDs reduce the ability of blood to clot and therefore increase bleeding after an injury.
