Celexa (citalopram) is an orally administered selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with a chemical structure unrelated to that of other SSRIs or of tricyclic, tetracyclic, or other available antidepressant agents. Citalopram is used to treat depression. It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.
Citalopram belongs to a class of drugs known as Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The drug works by restoring the balance of those neurotransmitters that are responsible for producing anxiety and mood changes. After the intake of Celexa drug, you will feel increased energy levels, a feeling of well being and enhancement of moods.
Side effects:
Celexa is considered to be a safe drug. However some side effects such as fatigue, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased sweating (hyperhidrosis), trembling, headache, dizziness, sleep disturbances, insomnia, cardiac arrhythmia, hallucinations, blood pressure changes, nausea and/or vomiting, diarrhea, heightened anorgasmia in females, impotence and ejaculatory problems in males have been reported.
Before using:
Celexa is an orally administered drug and can be taken with or without food. It is taken once a day, either in the morning or evening. It is recommended to start the medication with a lower dosage and gradually increasing it to the optimum dosage levels. Celexa can cause drowsiness and activities involving alertness should be avoided after consuming the drug.
Pregnant women shoud avoid using this drug especially in the last trimester. Babies of women, who have been administered Celexa in the last trimester have shown withdrawal symptoms upon birth.
Dosage:
An initial starting dosage of 20 mg daily is recommended. The dosage can be gradually increased to 40 mg a day, though some patients may require a dosage of 60 mg a day.
