Clinically useful nitrofurans, nitrofurantoin, Uribid act by depressing the formation of acetyl-co-enzyme A. It is an urinary antiseptic a primarily bacteriostatic agent. It can cause haemolytic anaemia in G-6 PD deficiency. It usually a course of two weeks given along with meals. If two courses are needed than gap of 1-2 weeks rest period should be observed.
Indications:
Cystitis, pyelitis, pyelonephritis, post-operative infections. Urinary tract infections.
Contraindications:
Anuria, during pregnancy, lactation, children < 1 month.
Adverse Effects:
Urine colour yellow brown. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, anorexia, headache, peripheral, neuropathy, aplastic anaemia, dyspnoea, chest pain, granulocytopenia, asthma, anaphylaxis cholestatic jaundice.
