Tropicamate is used to widen (dilate) the pupil of the eye in preparation for certain eye examinations. It belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics. Tropicamide works by relaxing certain eye muscles.
Dosage
Adult: Ophth Production of mydriasis As 0.5% soln: Instill 1-2 drops 15-20 mins before examination. Production of cycloplegia As 1% soln: Instill 1-2 drops, repeated after 5 mins.
May instill another drop after 20-30 mins for prolonged effect.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Narrow-angle glaucoma or shallow anterior chamber.
Special Precautions
Elderly, children, pregnancy.
Hypertension, hyperthyroidism, DM, cardiac disorders.
To reduce systemic absorption, press on the lacrimal sac for 1-2 minutes following instillation. Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities and protect eyes from bright illumination when pupils are dilated. May fail to produce adequate cycloplegia in children.
