Avandamet contains a combination of metformin and rosiglitazone, two oral diabetes medicines that help control blood sugar levels. Avandamet works by decreasing the amount of sugar that the liver produces and the intestines absorb. It also helps to make your body more sensitive to the insulin that you naturally produce.
Avandamet is for people with type 2 diabetes who do not use daily insulin injections. This medication is not for treating type 1 diabetes.

How Does It Work:
Avandamet is a combination of two diabetes medicines (rosiglitazone and metformin). These two medications work differently and have different effects in the body:
Rosiglitazone is part of a class of diabetes medication called thiazolidinediones (or sometimes called "glitazones"). Rosiglitazone helps to improve insulin sensitivity. This means that rosiglitazone helps your body respond to insulin better, which helps to lower blood sugar.
Metformin works in several ways. For example, it decreases the amount of sugar (glucose) made by the liver. It can also decrease the amount of sugar absorbed into the body (from the diet) and can make insulin receptors more sensitive, helping the body respond to its own insulin better. All of these effects cause a decrease in blood sugar levels.

Side Effects :
As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with Avandamet. However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate the medication well. When side effects do occur, in most cases they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.

The most common side effects of Avandamet include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Upper respiratory tract infections (similar to the common cold)
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach or heartburn.
